Anchoring new leadership at Ardmore Shipping: Smooth sailing ahead
Back to newsAfter a remarkable voyage as Ardmore’s founder and CEO, Anthony Gurnee retired on 16 September
2024, leaving behind a rich legacy. After 14 transformative years at the helm, Tony passed the baton to
Gernot Ruppelt, who assumed the role of CEO, while Bart Kelleher stepped into the dual position of
President and CFO. This marked the culmination of a meticulously planned succession process that
ensures Ardmore remains on an even keel as it navigates new opportunities in the ever evolving
shipping industry.
A legacy worth celebrating
Tony’s tenure was a defining era for Ardmore, steering the company from its inception in a humble Irish
farmhouse to a global leader in tanker operations. His leadership saw Ardmore through its IPO in 2013
and the acquisition of the fleet. “Tony built this company from scratch with a long-term vision, and his
strategic insights have shaped every corner of Ardmore,” said Bart.
Reflecting on his departure, Tony emphasized the importance of leadership evolution, adding, “It’s absolutely the right thing for me to step back and let the Board and new leadership forge their pathway to continued success.”
A well-timed transition
Tony’s decision to retire – a bittersweet moment for all at Ardmore – highlighted his faith in the team he
had built. Looking back on his tenure, he described the transition as both necessary and exciting,
emphasizing the importance of fresh perspectives for Ardmore’s continued success. His departure
underscores a commitment to good governance, as he allows the next generation of leaders to steer
the ship. “I have utmost confidence in Gernot and Bart to navigate Ardmore through its next chapter of
growth,” Tony shared. His leadership has seen Ardmore rise to prominence as an independent public
company, and his legacy will undoubtedly influence its ongoing voyage.
Gernot Ruppelt, no stranger to rough seas and tailwinds alike, brings over two decades of maritime experience to the top post. Joining Ardmore in 2013, Gernot’s over 23 years of maritime experience has been the compass behind the company’s stellar commercial growth. From his formative years
at Maersk, to leading Ardmore’s chartering and commercial operations, Gernot’s career embodies a
global perspective. He described his time at Ardmore as uniquely entrepreneurial compared to past
roles, saying, “It’s about evolving strategies to meet challenges head-on while embracing constant
innovation.” His extensive background spans tanker brokerage, trade management and organizational
development across five countries and three continents. His vision includes driving Ardmore’s focus on
energy transition, integrating new technologies, and exploring sustainable cargo opportunities.
Gernot expressed his excitement for this new chapter: “It’s an honor to take the helm at Ardmore.
Together with Bart, I’m committed to building on our successes and steering the company toward
continued innovation and excellence.”
Bart Kelleher joined Ardmore in 2022, bringing decades of experience in maritime operations and
finance. From his early days as a tanker officer to navigating Wall Street as an equity analyst,
Bart’s career is a testament to adaptability and leadership. His personal journey also resonates deeply
with Ardmore’s roots, as he returned to Ireland, a homeland shared by his grandparents, for this role.
Bart expressed excitement about the future, stating, “Strategically, we’re talking continuity with a
breath of new energy”. In Bart, Ardmore gains not only a steady hand at the wheel but also an
insightful strategist. He has already transformed critical aspects of the organization with his deep
maritime knowledge, complemented by financial acumen honed through years in leadership roles at
Chembulk Tankers and Principal Maritime. On what lays ahead, Bart remarked, “With the wind at our
backs, we are well-positioned to deliver exceptional value to stakeholders while navigating the
challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
A new chapter for Ardmore
With their collective expertise, Gernot and Bart are steering Ardmore into its next era, emphasizing a
balance of continuity and innovation. Both Gernot and Bart are keenly focused on leveraging
Ardmore’s strong position to adapt to shifting tides in the industry. Whether it’s embracing
sustainability, enhancing technological capabilities, or exploring new market horizons, this duo is ready
to anchor Ardmore’s legacy while charting new waters. Their priorities include leveraging Ardmore’s
strong financial position, fostering diversity, and maintaining operational agility to capitalize on
opportunities in evolving markets. “We are in the Goldilocks zone – not too modern, not too old –
perfectly positioned to embrace new challenges and opportunities,” commented Gernot.
