From bridge to boardroom: Robert Gaina’s journey at Ardmore
Back to newsAt Ardmore, we believe great leadership starts with experience, integrity, and a willingness to evolve. Few embody that more clearly than Robert Gaina.
From his early days at sea to his upcoming appointment as Chief Operating Officer in 2026, Robert’s journey is a powerful example of how Ardmore supports talent from within – enabling people to grow with the business, take on new challenges, and lead with purpose.
Building operational strength, from sea to shore
Robert began his maritime career at sea, gaining extensive experience on board product and chemical tankers operated on behalf of oil majors and global traders. A defining moment came in February 2013, when he took command of Ardmore Seavaliant, Ardmore’s first newly-built medium-range tanker. Leading its maiden voyage marked both a career milestone and a symbolic moment in Ardmore’s growth story.
In 2015, Robert transitioned ashore to become Cargo Operations Manager in Ardmore’s Cork office. The move coincided with a strategic pivot as Ardmore built internal capability to trade directly in the spot market. Robert played a key role in supporting this shift – overseeing safe, efficient cargo handling across an expanding fleet.
By 2018, Robert had been promoted to Commercial Director, reflecting both his leadership capability and his deep understanding of the commercial and operational sides of the business. Recognizing his potential, Ardmore supported him in pursuing a Global Executive MBA, which he completed in 2024, equipping him with added strategic insight and global perspective.
Later that year, he joined the senior management team. He will formally assume the role of Chief Operating Officer in January 2026.
Reflecting on his journey, Robert says:
“My connection with Ardmore began on board ship, and it has always been clear to me that the company values its people as much as its performance. The choice to name the first vessel Ardmore Seafarer says a lot about the culture and priorities of the business. Over the years, I’ve been given the chance to grow, to learn, and to take on new challenges. What makes the real difference is the trust and support across the team, from sea to shore, which is how we deliver and succeed together.
Ardmore keeps moving forward, and so do the people within it. I’m proud to be part of that journey and excited for what lies ahead.”
As Ardmore continues to grow and adapt to a dynamic market landscape, Robert’s experience and values will help guide the company’s evolution – ensuring performance and progress remain firmly at the helm.
